Muddled Refreshment (Cucumber, Basil, Lemon, Ginger Muddler)

Food.

Cucumber, Basil, Lemon, Ginger Adult Beverage

This drink could not be made possible without the help of my muddler. What would I do without it? I probably would be fine, but I know my drinks (in the words of Fergie, "Dranks!") would suffer.  This past summer I muddled so many adult bevs that my right arms muscles are larger than my left.  Kidding!

My arm strength also greatly increased due to juicing fresh citrus. That was the other major component in my muddled drinks.  This lead me to believed I needed an electric juicer.  The manual juicer I have works and I can use the startegies of heating the citrus in the microwave for a few seconds and then rolling them, but still electric (boogie woogie, woogie) just is better.

My husband told me I could order one through amazon if I got rid of another appliance in the kitchen.    First of all, I don’t really need his permission, but it makes sense since we live in a very minimalist household and have small amounts of storage left.  But I am really craving this one here.
Maybe for Christmas…wink, wink.

So let's get back to the topic…DRANKS!

I currently still (seriously) have a tons of herbs growing in my garden (DIY containers on my back deck) and I have been playing around with using them in my drinks for years.   My basil was growing so well this year that I had an abundance.  I also had fun with my rosemary, mint, and cilantro.   Using these herbs in drinks are so refreshing and perfect for a warm summer day.  Too bad its almost November.

This recipe below is not the rule.  Play with it however you like according to you taste.  I really like citrusy and slightly sweet and my husband like savory and strong (meaning lots of liquor).  When he makes the beverages it is the constant joke that I say,”it needs something.”  So, I usually am the drink master in this house.

Bar tools are important and to be taken seriously as a good bartender, you need the right tools.  This is the muddler I currently use.  I have two other wooden muddlers that work, but aren’t as good as the metal and plastic one that has teeth at the end.   You also should have a good shaker tin and a juicer that get the juice without all the elbow grease.

Cucumber, Basil, Lemon, Ginger Muddler

Directions:

2 slices English Cucumber (I leave the skin on)
4-5 pieces of fresh basil
1.5 oz. or 1 shot of fresh lemon juice
3 oz. or 2 shots of ginger vodka
1 Tbsp of Agave nectar or any preferred sweetener
  1. Muddle the cucumber and basil in the tin with two or three ice cubes until you see there is some juice from the cucumber.  I leave my skin on and seeds in the cucumber, but it doesn’t make make much of a difference.  Totally your preference.
  2. Add ice about ¾ way to the top of the tin.
  3. Add fresh lemon juice, ginger vodka, and agave nectar.
  4. Put the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously.
  5. Pout into a highball or Collins glass
  6. Garnish with slice of lemon and/or cucumber

If you really want to be fancy, strain the tin contents into a chilled martini glass. Then drink it with you pinky in the air. J

With this drink you sometimes end up chewing it, but I personally enjoy that.  The recipe is just a general guideline and can be fashioned to your preferences.

What muddled dranks have you made recently?
